I think you misunderstand what Force Widescreen is.
If you want a pillarboxed picture, then adjust your TV settings.

Thanks for the reply. can you explain what the "force widescreen" option is
supposed to do? Based on your answer I can only guess it might be meant to be
used to force the GC game to detect that the TV is WS and set it to WS output
if that setting is available.
Anyway, the issue is, not all TVs have the letterbox option so it would be nice
to have this option from within nintendont. I'll understand if this isn't
possible to be done though.

To the developers, any chance of an inbuilt 4:3 letterbox viewing option being
implemented in Nintendont? Majority of GC games are in 4:3 anyway, and they are
unnecessarily stretched in Nintendont in widescreen TVs. I know users can do
this manually using TV aspect ratio settings. However Some TVs do not have
aspect ratio options. If it is simply never going to be implemented or is
simply not going to be possible, please feel free to delete the thread. Thanks.

To the last commenter: besides the edge case of TVs with no aspect ratio
options (where do you even find these?), pillarboxing would be undesirable
since it also mean reducing the picture quality. The reason for this is that it
means throwing around two extra scaling operations (in the Wii video hardware
and again on the user's TV), 99.9% of users would be better off avoiding that
by pushing a couple of buttons on their TV remote.
That said, I'm speaking specifically about the Wii. I have zero understanding
of when the Wii U steps in to do its upscaling or to what (horizontal)
resolution it scales (I don't own one), so it /may/ be that users on HDMI
wouldn't see reduced picture quality.
Ultimately, though, the effort of implementing a feature which at best benefits
a handful of people with really weird TVs and at worst makes games look /worse/
(and in the middle benefits people who don't like pushing buttons on their TV
remote and don't mind reducing the fidelity of the games they play in order to
avoid pushing buttons on their TV remote) probably places it as a pretty low
priority.
But I don't speak for the developers. If somebody feels this is a worthwhile
feature, they might decide to implement it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well, I have a Sony Bravia TV (KDL40V5500) which does not support aspect ratio
setting while in HD mode using HDMI cables. It does support aspect ratio
settings if I went into Wii U settings and change the output to 480p (the TV
only lets me manually set AR to 4:3 when the signal is SD). But that means I
have to either play Wii U games in 480p or keep changing the HD settings back
and forth. This isn't a problem for the Wii as it does not output HD anyway.
But for users who use the Wii U and have a Sony Bravia TV, it is a problem. I
think these users would find a built in aspect ratio option in Nintendont quite
convenient. I understand your point about the loss in quality (if that is in
fact true), but like I said, it can be optional from the settings and people
who are happy with things how they are wouldn't ever have to use this option.

I'd like to vote for this feature too, actually.
My TV does not actually let me adjust aspect ratio. If the console is ouputting
1080p, then this will always be displayed as 16:9. As a result, the WiiU is
outputting the games as 4:3 stretched. Some way to force pillarboxing withing
Nintendont would be a massive help to a great load of people,

A project member stated in comment #6: "Games display 4:3 by default". This is
true. However, as the poster above me and I have explained, some HDTVs stretch
the default 4:3 into 16:9, especially in Wii U consoles in HD, and provides no
option to change back the aspect ratio. All we are requesting is an OPTION in
apply a pillerbox ON TOP of the default 4:3 so that even if the TV incorrectly
stretches the default 4:3 image, we have a way around it without buying a new
TV. I hope the project members reconsider. I understand if it is a very low
priority though.

i would love this too, after finally finding a 480p crt television i find out
that the aspect ratio cannot be changed when in progressive mode and 4:3
stretched looks horrible

On my old Lg plasma tv when I'm put setting to 4:3 the side bars are grey
without way to change color. So I also would like an option to force 4:3. tx
