Wells #2760

So, i'm putting this here because the IRC conversation is very temporary.

Digging a well in survival might be a way to replace the infinite toilets of yesterday. But there isn't enough water in the ground, you might say:

But then that water would be too deep to access?

https://docs.google.com/viewer? url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.epa.gov%2Fregion1%2Fstudents%2Fpdfs%2Fgwb1.pdf&docid=43d28ae79beeef6874fe04fba1a4abbe&a=bi&pagenumber=1&w=800

What about radioactivity in the water? Well, I don't have enough care to actually figure out how bad the effects of the cataclysm would be for water sources, but this might be good to look at:

Just some stuff for consideration. Should wells be added, there was thought about making it so that they held water charges that refilled over time, and depending on the deepness of the well, it would be able to store more water, and you'd need better and better tools to make better wells. A survival well is basically digging until you find water. A better well goes much deeper. To build such things takes real time. Especially as you get deeper.

So, this would make the game too easy, right? Well there are already quite a few infinite water sources in the game, and a bunch of funnels works pretty well, except it's rather inconsistent. What the discussion in IRC eventually decided was that having such a system would make settling down easier, but at the moment, there's very little reason to settle down due to storehouses being essentially closets. There are few threats to actually bunker down and fortify. As such, this issue is just here as an idea, and to collect the results of an IRC discussion.

I believe one of the lab notes specifies that the zombifying substance is in the ground water, so digging a wall and drinking nonpurified ground water might very well be a bad idea.

dwarfkoala commented 11 years ago

But the zombifying substance only works after death I think.

Yeah, the ooze infection actually has already spread throughout the populace (your character is already infected, for example) groundwater just happened to be the method of transmission.

That said I would like to eventually add some wells in, though I don't really imagine them as something your character can easily create at the moment.

I rather would have them be static, part of some kind of building or structure, than being able to dig one yourself. Both for gameplay and common sense reason. Digging a deep hole might be easy, finding water at the bottom is not.

Not to mention that, as of now, we have a lot of ways to get water: toilets, rivers, funnels (and it rains enough that in a single afternoon you'll fill more containers than you'll ever need), the already present bottled water (particularly labs, which are bottledwaterland), probably some more I forget now. Why make it even easier?

Some random links that might help put all this into context:

One thing to remember is that if we have wells, they need to be integrated into z-level support, so you'll actually have holes leading down through the various z-levels. Though I don't want to go as far as DF and actually have a bucket item making the trip when you get water or have to do things to maintain the wellwater.

We have a possibility to dig wells now, so we can close this issue (I suppose).
