Currently melee weapon damage is handled by a variety of different factors which include your stats, skills, the weapons material(s), and whether or not the weapon is classified as 'durable' or not, along with a healthy dose of random number generation.
Basically, the stronger and less skilled you are, the more likely you are to damage your weapons through melee use, and when you 'upgraded' your baseball bat by pounding all those nails through it, it lost its 'durable' flag (baseball bats aren't made to do that) so I'm guessing that plus RNG equals a damaged nailbat.
But now there's loads of ways to fix your damaged stuff; so don't complain, fix it!

If you have to fix your previously-reliable weapon every 10 kills, then that's a pretty severe Nerf. I can understand why Nickboom might not be thrilled here.
It's not an 'every X kills' thing right now, since wear and tear doesn't accumulate. What @Nickboom1 is seeing is quite likely just bad luck, since we're only talking about a single level of damage.
Ah after more testing its actually not that bad, but I cant figure out how to craft a repair kit.
Fabrication level one, other/tools.
I was using a nail bat and it got damaged after about 10 zombies...thats a little crazy.
