Bicycle repair requirements #74656

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Simple bicycle saddles or wheels required at least 1 mechanics to be replaced, but 0 for foot pedals? Through my childhood I had multiple bikes and none of them required more than a key and a minute to remove a saddle. cataclysm-tiles_f24yxzFyXC cataclysm-tiles_iFEmsFhJHV cataclysm-tiles_kREuDQYDQd

Solution you would like.

Almost every bike is constructed with easy-to-remove parts, so even a child could replace or remove them at any time. While many of them required a single screwdriver/wrench/hex key, some had a small valve to be operated with bare hands. image_2024-06-18_185822398 opera_vFgLlNDxkz

However, in CDDA pedals took no skill to remove, but are described as a part of a whole crank system, which would take much more time to replace, than a saddle. There are a lot of videos as examples on the internet but I'll list one of them below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9rvqKjJZSw .

Describe alternatives you have considered.

I think it would be wise to change skill requirements for saddle to 0 mechanics, and change foot pedals to 1 mechanics.

Well, saddles are easy to remove and install on the factory-made bikes, but in CDDA saddles can be attached to something that is not a factory-made bike. It doesn't justify such low skill requirement for the crank system though.

I am effectively mechanic skill 0.5. Replacing the saddle on my bike was not a problem. Getting the crankshaft replaced (and getting really badly damaged pedals taken off) required a trip to the shop.

Getting the crankshaft replaced (and getting really badly damaged pedals taken off) required a trip to the shop.

Usually the main issue here is not a mechanical skill, but the fact that most modern (and even fairly old) bicycles require special tools for this particular task, that are not present in generic workshops and toolkits. Like the crankshaft wrench and pedal removal tool. They are the tools that are specific to bicycle repair only, not used in other spheres of industry. That's super annoying.
