ClojureBridge Intro to Programming Workshop

Location

Locale: San Francisco

Venue: CircleCI 201 Spear Street 12th Floor San Francisco, CA 94105

Description

This workshop is for women interested in learning to program with Clojure, an expressive, general-purpose programming language.

People who identify as men are welcome to come and learn so long as they are guests of an attendee who does not identify as a man. ClojureBridge is emphatically queer and trans* friendly. This is an introductory workshop. The focus is on those new to programming. Complete beginners are welcome! (If you have experience programming in another language and would like to learn Clojure, you may find the pace of the workshop slow.)

This workshop introduces data structures and functions, and provides opportunities to use them to create programs. We'll meet up on Friday to install all of the software you need, then spend Saturday learning and writing code.

Additional Info

Schedule

The InstallFest on Friday is a time to get some help setting up a working Clojure development environment. If you'd prefer to set up your environment on your own you can skip that and work through the setup documentation on your own.

You do not need to be at the whole InstallFest - drop in for an hour any time before 6 PM and 9 PM to get set up!

Please do show up on time on Saturday.

Hi @davidchambers , is this chapter ready to go on the website?

davidchambers commented 7 years ago

I believe so, @yokolet, based on the reaction () from @hannahhenderson. :)

Oh, hey! By the way, I'm coincidentally going to be in San Francisco from December 8-17. 😂

Let me know if you'd like any help @hannahhenderson! 💞

hannahhenderson commented 7 years ago

@k4y3ff we'd love to have you join!! I'm planning to start more volunteer outreach/coordination in November. Until then, I'm (very occasionally) posting in #clojurebridge-sf in Clojurians.

To make sure I actually email you, please sign up through this portal: http://www.volunteersignup.org/QKFBL

And if you have a suggestion for a better volunteer-coordinating portal, please lmk! I wanted something that wasn't strictly my own email... not sure this one's ideal, but it isn't terrible. (High praise, I know.)

@hannahhenderson http://www.clojurebridge.org/events/2017-12-15-san-francisco Please check!

Tentatively, I used Circle CI logo saved for the previous workshop. If you want to change, let me know. The image format should be JPG or PNG. If you have only SVG, I will convert it to JPG using ImageMagick.

I don't see the CircleCI logo when I look at the link, but the form otherwise looks good to me. I think "Sponsors for ClojureBridge Intro to Programming Workshop" could just be sponsors, or the "A huge thank you to our sponsors:" section could be used instead.

Thank you for linking to the website!

@hannahhenderson The phrase, "A huge thank you to our sponsors:" is baked and can't change easily. Sorry. But, thanks for the suggestion. The site is on the way to migrate to another one. We still have a time to consider such phrases baked in at this moment.

yokolet commented 7 years ago

@hannahhenderson Let me correct, the phrase, "Sponsor for " + event title, is autogenerated by Rails app and hard to change. Again, freedom to change it, say, "A huge thank you to our sponsors:" would be really nice.

Is everything on track for the workshop this weekend, @hannahhenderson?

hannahhenderson commented 6 years ago

I think so. We've got volunteers and space all lined up. We're a bit thin on attendees at the moment. I'm assuming holidays are a big reason why. I wanted to make sure we have a Q4 event to keep the organizing momentum up here :)

I  that sentiment, Hannah. A small workshop does far more good than no workshop at all. :)

davidchambers commented 6 years ago

Was the workshop a success, Hannah? I hope so. :)

What worked particularly well, and what could be improved for future workshops?
