1.12.1 mac os sporadic crashes #436

the application crashes approximately once every two days while editing a source file. crash logs are attached.

I took a quick look, but I don't see a lot to go on, unfortunately.

the crash logs correspond to two failure modes. in one case, the application quits. in the other it freezes.

in may cases, the immediately apparent function is "ensure_safe_for_string_operations".
