New Windows server #10

Define hardware and OS requirements for new Arma server.

Despite some opposition, I'd like to recommend doing an in-place upgrade of Windows (i.e. not reinstalling). This would require upgrading from 2008 -> 2012R2 -> 2019. Because of us only having remote access it is of course a bit risky, but it's the only choice (outside of not upgrading at all) that puts the least amount of work on Seneram.

We'd ask Seneram to be on stand-by if it all breaks. Every other upgrade option still makes us rely on Seneram, so in case the upgrade breaks anything it's no different from the other options.

Concerning licensing: Windows Server is EXPENSIVE. Windows Server 2019 Standard is about ~$900 pre-tax if it's legit. So here's some alternatives that are a bit in the middle, with the worst being buying from G2A or cracking it:

Just realised I'll be ~30 minutes away from the server in 2 weeks to see a friend. It's a 8 hour drive so another 30 minutes won't hurt. :)

This would probably still require Seneram's presence, but should be more comfortable for him since I'll do the work. Dates are 15-18th of April.

Why exactly do we need Windows Server? .. Why won't a desktop license work? .. Is it somehow restricted to not run if it detects a rack chassis?

If it doesn't have RDP, we could always use VNC, ie. TightVNC, which is free.

As for upgrading, I don't think physical presence is needed, I'm pretty sure Seneram has KVM switches with network access, as is tradition.

A desktop license should fulfill our needs as long as we stop Windows from auto-rebooting and auto-installing updates. RDP and CIFS sharing works too after starting some features. "Upgrading" from WIndows Server to Windows 10 doesn't work as far as I know, but if we're going to do a full reinstall that doesn't matter.

Good point! I forgot about that. Hopefully! It's not as common anymore due to built-in KVM á la IPMI. We should definitely ask since it makes everything a lot more simple.

Well, if you have some extra cash hanging around...

No, I don't want to hear about G2A or cracks.

That was not a suggestion.

It will be.

Pretty sure our hardware does not work with a desktop license. I don't think there are W10 drivers for our CPU and stuff.
