New CNTO Website #9

Open JamesTheClarke opened 3 years ago

I've created an initial draft for a potential new website using the WP divi theme.

Posting the issue here to keep track of it on the ideas repo and have others contribute as well: https://www.carpenoctem.co/forums/m/26081621/viewthread/33371408-new-website

Very nice. Do you want me to create a repository for this so people can help you out?

JamesTheClarke commented 3 years ago

Yes, I think that would be useful to back-up the WP files and for more granular issue tracking. However, I would recommend making it private and non-forkable to ensure that no website data can be exported and user data may be stolen.

EDIT: also access to that repo should be "need to have only" because again private user data would be included in that backup.

@enrico-ghidoni I remember from our last chat that you are a web dev right? If you want to you could create an account on www.cnto-arma.com and I can give you admin access. :)

I've created a new private repo for the WP website draft: https://github.com/CntoDev/cnto-wp-website

Current access: @CntoDev/ssgt , @milivojm and @enrico-ghidoni .

If anybody else wants to contribute contact me directly and I'll add you.

I mostly do that yes, does not make me proud but whatever :D .

We definitely need a CMS such as WordPress for, well, content management of the static parts, although I'd like to do a security check before green-lighting WP. To its defense, almost every CMS has some vulnerabilities AFAIK. What version are you using for the prototype?

Second point in the agenda, a part from the aesthetics, would be to find a nice forum engine. I can do some research but I wouldn't stick to WP plugins as they tend to be messy and not satisfying.

@enrico-ghidoni more than happy to have you check on security. Can give you admin access when you made an account on the new website. I can also give you access to the NAS where the website is currently hosted if need be. Though our security expectations should remain reasonable for a gaming community standard rather than a business website. I don't think WP is inherently less secure than enjin. :D Naturally for a business solution WP would be questionable. I use the latest version of WP and Divi theme.

I've done a lot of research in October and November for WP forums that work well with BuddyPress and look good too, while being exportable for the future. Settled on wpForo for now because it ticked all three boxes. Check the issue tracker of https://github.com/CntoDev/cnto-wp-website for more details.
