Improve averaging #10

Hi, a few things

  1. You didn't re-sync your master branch with upstream, so your --block commit is mixed in here, which I squashed, so this PR is conflicting and can't be merged as-is.
  2. Please breakup implementation of the averaging scripts from the new COM code (different PRs)

I think the filenames used for the python and shell aren't very good either. They should probably be prefixed with something to identify they belong to this code.
