Refactor tests #9

All tests are basically functional tests, this is unmaintainable as such tests are fragile, i.e. lots of tests need fixing whenever we change a feature.

Much has changed, _algorithm has got new tests (so only test_algorithm is relevant at the moment), main and _various still need new tests. After that we can remove all the other (outdated) tests; maybe scavenge them for good tests first.
