Can't Mailchimp automatically email Luke if somebody subscribes? That would remove the need for a third-party script altogether.

No idea - Luke provided the original site/script.

Hi sorry for the houdini routine long story. I have renewed the domain. It was originally rigged up that the subscription added the user to a mailchimp db and emailed confirmation.

Commit 2a3437 actually fixed this, but this issue was left dangling. Closing.
