Suitable candidates for working space
HiVE Vancouver, 2nd floor, 128 W Hastings - We often overlook this space as it's on the way to Lighthouse literally. However it's a notably women-friendly, progressively-minded space, and tends to be even more communitarian in focus than Launch Academy, hosting numerous organisations we should connect with, such as OpenData BC, Access to Media Society and PeaceGeeks. Also tends to have a higher media presence than the other two. Possible downside: Not open weekends
The Network Hub, 422 Richards (above Waves and across from SFU Downtown @ Harbour Centre). Lots of flexible plans for meeting and collaboration, offers meeting space and hotdesking etc. More profit-oriented and entrepreneurially-minded than numbers 1 and 3 on this list, roughly akin to LA. Possible downside: Not open weekends.
Creative Coworkers, Unit B1 (buzz #010), 343 Railway St, Vancouver, BC. Non-profit. Really interesting space in Gastown. Offers free trial for a day for individuals. Hosts a number of community-minded events. Has a very organic, cosier feel than the others. 'Always open'.
@northtwilight Did you talk to any of these guys yet?
Will happen today or tomorrow, I have to review each of their plans first so that I know what I'm asking about. I gather costs may be an issue with all three places (welcome to Vancouver, I guess) but we'll see.
Digression and side note: One intriguing thing I'm seeing with HiVE Vancouver is that they offer coworking arrangements with the Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto (I seriously love this place and know it well from my time out there), as well as Impact Hub in Ottawa and Innovation Works in London (ON). Obviously not something for right now, but neat nonetheless.
Whoops, didn't mean to close this out.
The idea is to find free meeting space so if cost is an issue we will just not use them.
They can have their logo on our website, which right now is just one page, and also on the About page of the wiki. Renato posted a link to the webpage, I don't know where it is. It's on github pages. I tried codedoesgood.github.io but that didn't work
That's going to be tough to do.
That's the whole point of this task, to find venues that will donate meeting space. We only need 1 slot a month.
I'll look at VSB then.
Can't find contact details for the Network Hub but I'm heading into town today and can ask in person. Also VPL has free space available, with conditions (have to hold a regular [monthly?] event at the library, with the library, to promote literacy) that may or may not jibe with our priorities. Will keep looking.
@northtwilight How's this coming?
HiVE only allows meeting space 9 to 5 M-F. I'm asking if we can use a non-meeting room space (an open area will do) if they provide it.
Also they've put me in touch with PeaceGeeks also in the same space. Following up but it's more likely for general interest, not this issue specifically.
That actually brings up something else. I'm going to make a note on our Meeting board, listing groups doing things similar to us. We should talk about them and how we'd like to approach them / if we want to.
@northtwilight it's in the To Discuss column, can you edit and add the ones you know about? I have a list to add also I will add later when I have time: https://github.com/CodeDoesGood/org/projects/3
We now have a networking volunteer: @felicelam, reassigning this ticket to her.
Felice, we are in need of meeting space in the tech community. We are looking for one 3 hour meeting a month, prefer Thursday evenings if we have a choice to keep with tradition but we can make other days work if needed. We are open to it being one location or different locations. With different locations we could get to know a bigger part of the Vancouver community but not sure if that is feasible.
Earlier this week, I checked out this tech coworking space in Gastown. Info: http://www.tribespace.ca/ I'm investigating through other tech startup friends. I'll keep you posted as I get answers.
In communication with the space. More via Slack.
