JS101 Final session! and - Feedback please!! Also, please come to our Christmas drink :)

Dear All, so that was it - for now! We finished as we started, it was only @Gicela and me for the last session :) While I might have contributed to JS101's demise by writing about possibly finishing it, it also just felt like the right time. Basically all our recent regulars have found jobs, which is actually a nice reason! So maybe time for a break, get some distance, and look at what went well and what could be improved.

Which brings me to the next point. I mentioned a few weeks back I wanted to do this - I've created a survey! And I really think it's not that bad, and the questions are relevant and not too many. And it might even be useful to you recalling what helped you most etc... Cause that's one of the questions. - I think the results can be useful to a coming group (we have a person interested in helping to run a web dev learners group), and it could also help us with getting sponsors if there is some positive feedback. So please fill it in if you can! It's here : https://katjad.typeform.com/to/dPUPiM (@Gicela has already done it and approved!)

So, for the moment I won't write much more. As for the last sessions, we stuck to the plan of having a topic each time (callbacks, Promises, ES6 etc). But I did not prepare it as well as I should have and did not stick much to the YDKJS book either. We also did not have many people attending and there was not a consistent group which made it all a bit fragmented. I don't think the sessions were useless, I for one learned some interesting new stuff. But they did not work as well as some other sessions we've had.

Just a bit about the app: Thanks so much @mjg17 for doing some work on it, and helping me out with the OAuth stuff (never-ending story!). I did actually have a working solution, but it was kind of hacky. The current one which is now also deployed is better though I think not totally secure either ;) Anyway, we have a working app which I think is quite an achievement. The UI and looks are still pretty bad I think. But in any case I want to carry on working on it, though it might be quite piecemeal for a while! Main thing is I want to document it so it can become more accessible to others.

Curiously, the certificates on our server had just run out (I could not manage renewal through a cron job because of the way the app is run) and I have renewed them, which works well. Also the deployment via git which I set up with pointers from @rinse0ut So both website and app are very much alive! :) : https://javascript101.co.uk/ and https://resources.javascript101.co.uk/

There's a lot I could write about the past years of JS101, I have learned so so much from it, and not only that, it is hard to describe what it's meant to me. Maybe another time. Now it's late, and also I want to hear from you first. Anyway, thank you so much for having been part of this!!

Oh, one last thing. Next Thursday, 14 December from 6pm we are having Christmas drinks! There are some JS101ers already registered, so if you hadn't heard of it, please consider coming along! It will probably be in King William Ale House in King Street. If you have a better idea, you have until tomorrow Thursday afternoon to influence this decision :) Main criterium is it should not be too loud! And also not too expensive.

Hope to see you soon!

A round of applause for @Gicela and especially for @katjad for making JS101 a big success. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks @mjg17! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Also thanks everybody who filled in the survey so far. I have 6 reponses now. Will write up / visualise results in some way in the new year. (Could also put raw data in Google spreadsheet if people interested and happy with that.) So far everybody still likes JavaScript :)

Btw there will be a 'webdev101' in the new year - not run by me or @gicela - , and I think it will be very good. We also found a nice new cafe with an upstairs room! I can imagine there will be a new JS101 at some point too.

Have a lovely Christmas all!
