Provide application audio when screen sharing #407

When collaborating together with fellow developers, it is often useful to view a video on a software topic in a screen share. The current CT behavior is to show the video but not provide the audio.

The behavior that works, is exactly that provided in other apps which permit screen sharing of applications with computer audio, ala Zoom, Slack, Discord, Meet, Teams, etc. whereby the computer audio feed is shared rather than just a device (mic).

With the current CT behavior, I am forced to use an additional collaboration tool, from the list above, to achieve this capability while primarily using CT.

Paul, thanks for the report; this is definitely a useful capability to have when screen sharing.

While we will take a look at adding this feature to CodeTogether, for the near term there is a workaround if you join the audio/video meeting from Chrome.

We realize of course that this isn't a substitute for application-level audio sharing, but perhaps it will be handy in some cases.

Interesting work around that might be a good solution if you can confirm for me that I can join, as host, from the app and also, simultaneously, as a guest from the browser. Thanks.

  • You can share the audio of a Chrome tab (use the "Share tab audio" checkbox) , so if you wanted to share a video for instance, you could open it in Chrome and its audio would be shared in the meeting.
  • On Windows only, if you share the entire screen, you will see a "Share system audio" option.

We realize of course that this isn't a substitute for application-level audio sharing, but perhaps it will be handy in some cases.

Paul, if you're talking about joining the audio/video meeting, you will always be joining that from a browser, as we don't host a/v meetings in the IDE. When you choose to join a/v from an IDE, we open a browser window with the a/v meeting. If your default browser isn't Chrome, you can simply copy and paste the a/v meeting URL (different from the session invite URL) into Chrome to join from there. Does this help?

Yes, it does. Thanks.
