Applying for Affordable Housing #2

Open ErnieAtLYD opened 8 years ago

Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

How might we improve the affordable housing application process?

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

Subsidized housing programs provide housing assistance for low-income residents, residents with mental illness, elderly, individuals with disabilities, or any families facing serious barriers to retaining housing.

Affordable housing is super important for healthy communities. It can stabilize people who may be at risk of losing everything. Applying for housing subsidies can sometimes take years and involve applications to many different lotteries. Each application requires different up to date information regarding your income status and household size, to name a few.

Code for America is researching how to improve the affordable housing application process. We need your help to understand what is out there now and your wisdom on how to improve it.

Tell us more about the current state of your project idea.

Do you have any links to news articles, text, mockups, code, or data?

Hey Ernie,

Excited to take part in the conversation! I've actually started a Facebook group called Gypsy Housing - Miami to facilitate finding more affordable housing in Miami. It's a common theme in other cities like NY/LA considering the cost of living. I think building a good community up of people interested in affordable housing can definitely take place here. From there I'd love to explore ways we can start the conversation with other potential stakeholders, property owners like the Avra from Roam. With Design Thinking and technology there has to be ways we can improve the layout of affordable properties in Miami.
