We are using colours in some places to give information to the user. It was pointed out that using colours might be a problem for people that suffer from colour blindness.

There exist palettes that are considered safe for all know varieties of color-blindness. There are a number of resources available to define one: the first that appeared when I looked was: http://safecolours.rigdenage.com/colourchoice.html - if you are using GNOME, there are available display filters that simulate various sorts of colorblindness, which can help allow those who are not colorblind to assist with testing palettes.
