That's indeed true for some of the labels in the Settings dialog as I've noticed lately (I did the localization for both French and German). It doesn't make any sense though to further shorten the translations as they're already quite compressed, further shortening would lead us away from the sense of the English original here (furthermore, I took Apples own French and German localizations as a guideline for terminology and I think it's preferable to keep it that way).
Increasing sizes for the relevant checkboxes and buttons is IMHO the way to go.

The string labels in the Settings dialog are truncated when the app is displayed in German (both for the checkboxes and the buttons). I assume that the width of the buttons and labels is somehow hardcoded and the German strings are too long.
