I think day is better since then we won't spam with failure notifications/possibly use data. The error is likely due to authentication problems anyways (other failures are not likely, especially on the school/Translink's end), so retrying is futile.
Do we want the auto-renew failure to retry in a day or an hour? I think it's supposed to be in an hour, but I accidentally set it to a day.
