Concepts to add (or add as synonym if already there) #2

Hi Russ @poldrack , I have met with our clinical team on a number of Task/Assessment items that appear to be measuring concepts that are not present in the CA. Below is a list of 7 concepts we propose adding to the CA if their synonyms do not already exist (I did not find any synonyms, but please let me know if I missed something). If there are synonymous concepts already present, please add the term as a synonym.

  1. Elation: CCDAIM_08 I get overly enthusiastic. CCDAIM_07 My happy moods are so strong that I feel that I'm in heaven"." CCDAIM_02 When I feel happy it is a strong type of exhuberance. CCDAIM_14 When something good happens, I am usually much more jubilant than others. CCDAIM_40 When I am happy the feeling is more like contentment and inner calm than one of exhilaration and excitement. CCDAIM_29 When I know I have done something very well, I feel relaxed and content rather than excited and elated. CA concept: Elation does not yet exist. Our clinical team indicated that these items are not measuring ‘happiness’ (which is in the CA), but rather ‘elation’ which is a distinct psychiatric symptom. Is there already a term in the atlas for ‘elation’ that I may have missed? Elation: great happiness and exhilaration. synonyms:euphoria, ecstasy, delight,, glee, jubilation, exultation, bliss, rapture If not, could it be added?

  2. Extroversion: Example: ATQ_67 I usually like to spend my free time with people. CCDAIM_03 I enjoy being with other people very much. CDIN_11 Question 11 0=I like being with people.|1=I do not like being with people many times.|2=I do not want to be with people at all. CA concept: Currently, the only term in CA that seems to even loosely address this concept is Antisocial personality. However, this is too specific of a concept. Could ‘extroversion’ be included in the CA?

  3. Avoidance: Example: ATQ_72 When I am afraid of how a situation might turn out, I usually avoid dealing with it. 1=extremely untrue|2=quite untrue|3=slightly untrue|4=neither true nor false|5=slightly true|6=quite true|7=extremely true
CA concept: The example is clearly measuring ‘avoidance’, which is a specific symptom/concept where one’s response to a negative/unpleasant feeling is to avoid it. I did not see a concept in the CA that fits this definition. Is there one? If not, could ‘Avoidance’ be added?

  4. Pessimism: Example: CDIN_02 Question 2 2=Nothing will ever work out for me.|1=I am not sure if things will work out for me.|0=Things will work out for me O.K. GDSC_05 Are you hopeful about the future? CA concept: I did not see a CA concept for ‘Pessimism’. Did I miss it? If it is not there, could we add ‘Pessimism’?

  5. Self-confidence Example: DSEQ_11 I feel self-confident CA concept: Our clinical team agreed that ‘confidence’ is, at this point its own concept. I did not see it in the atlas. Is there a concept that you consider a synonym of ‘self-confidence’ or ‘lack of self-confidence’ in the atlas? If note can ‘self-confidence’ be added?

  6. Self-esteem: Example: CDIN_06 Question 6 2=I hate myself.|1=I do not like myself.|0=I like myself. CA concept: I don’t readily see the concept that would cover self-image/self-esteem. The RDoC Construct this would map into is Self Knowledge.

  7. Visual/light sensitivity Example: ATQ_54 Colorful flashing lights bother me. CA concept: There is currently no concept I can find for this.

Here are 5 additional ones we propose to add after a second round with the Clinical Team:

  1. Habitual- Shows a disinterest or general unwillingness to try new things. A desire to follow the same routines. A preference for novelty would be ‘Habitual-negative ’ NEOFFI_08 I think it's interesting to learn and develop new hobbies.- habitual-negative DMASC_07 The idea of going away to camp scares me, maps to ‘anxiety’ because it is not an expression of ‘preference’ to not go do something new, but rather a clearly articulated fear.

  2. Disappointment- the feeling of sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of one's hopes or expectations. We considered the more technical ‘frustrative non-reward’, but our clinical team thought that frustrative non-reward was too specific of a term.

  3. Mania:A state, often coupled with a feeling of happiness, of intense excitement, euphoria, and abnormal overactivity, uncontrollable energy, and sometimes delusions. Items coded to ‘Mania’: CCDAIM_22 When I'm happy I feel very energetic. NEOFFI_32 I often feel as if I'm bursting with energy. (Mania or fatigue-negative) Note on ‘Mania’ vs. ‘Elation’: We had already submitted the request to add ‘Elation’ as a distinct concept to the Atlas (Elation: great happiness and exhilaration, synonyms:euphoria, ecstasy, delight, glee, jubilation, exultation, bliss, rapture). ‘Elation’ is the the intense emotion, where as ‘mania’ is characterised by always having physical energy/hyperactivity in response to that intense happiness (i.e. ‘elation’ is part of ‘mania’).

  4. Stimulation seeking- sensory stimulation seeking behavior particularly visual and auditory stimulation. Seeks to be around flashing lights, sounds. This is a symptom in autism where children will even wiggle their own fingers in front of their own face. Example: ATQ_07 I would not enjoy the sensation of listening to loud music with a laser light show. This would be Stimulation seeking-negative ATQ_30 I would probably enjoy playing a challenging and fast paced video-game that makes lots of noise and has lots of flashing, bright lights. NEOFFI_22 I like to be where the action is.

  5. Risk/thrill seeking: the request here is actually for a definition change AND addition of new concept.
Proposed change is to modify the current definition of risk seeking to ‘a desire or pleasure in participating in potentially dangerous activities’. Example: I like to ride roller coasters I would enjoy driving a car as fast as possible on an open road The current definition should be assigned to a new concept Risk tolerance (or something similar) as it speaks of “The willingness of an individual to choose an option with a less-than-certain probability of reward over an option with a certain reward of equal or higher expected value. Which does not capture behaviors of individuals who prefer risk”

the proposal re: "risk-seeking" is challenging because this is a term that is used differently amongst different literatures. in the decision making literature, "risk seeking" has a specific meaning around willingness to accept risk as defined in the economic sense as variance over possible outcomes. probably need a disambiguation page there.

I have raised an issue for the new cognitive atlas (https://github.com/poldracklab/cogat/issues/109) that will add "Personality traits" as a concept. These can then be included under that category, along with many other traits defined in that literature.
