Error related to "rmarkdown" package #2

When installing using the instructions, I am getting the following error:

─  installing the package to build vignettes
E  creating vignettes (8s)
   --- re-building ‘GettingStarted.Rmd’ using rmarkdown
   Warning in engine$weave(file, quiet = quiet, encoding = enc) :
     The vignette engine knitr::rmarkdown is not available, because the rmarkdown package is not installed. Please install it.

Installing rmarkdown gets rid of this issue but another one (a bit more cryptic) comes up.

R version is v3.6.3 running on Ubuntu 20.04, without RStudio.
