markup in descriptive metadata #69

As we're presenting scientific data, it's often necessary to use Greek letters,
italics, subscripts, etc. How do I enter these? At the moment I'm using HTML
codes (e.g., α), but they're being displayed literally.

Right now it's possible to enter any character you like (including Greek
characters, mathematical symbols, superscripted and subscripted numbers), so
long as you can type them. So one could use WIndows Character Map or the Mac
Character Palette, or similar.

It may be possible to add some kind of keyboard or button shortcuts to the
form, to assist in inputting the more commonly-used characters.

Italics is a different story, because it's not a character but a format - this
would require embedded markup. But this is also possible, using a rich text
editor widget in the data entry form. One thing to note is that the RIF-CS
format in which metadata is exported to ANDS doesn't currently support
formatting, though there are plans to add it. Until then, any formatting would
be lost on export. That's not a big deal though I think.

It IS when the formatting is meaningful. Sub and Superscript data will be
lost... not good if they're used in equations, for example.

Perhaps LaTeX or something equivalent would work?
