It's confusing looking at a chord diagram with 5 dots, until you realize that it's meant to be barred.
The problem is we're displaying diagrams without finger details - it doesn't seem right to show barres on some when there are no finger details provided other than that.
I think the solution is to only show the barre if the ONLY way to finger the chord is by barring, ie if there are more than four non-open notes played.
