Breaking News: Reinventing the Online News Economy #1

Open katiejohnson opened 5 years ago

katiejohnson commented 5 years ago

In this challenge, we want you to rewrite the rules on how we experience media online. Content is being presented to us in new ways, faster than we understand the technology behind it, and we continue to not know how to navigate our own understanding of reputation and the accuracy of information. When was the last time you looked at the source material of a news story? We believe there is an opportunity to produce a clearer form of credentialing and signaling.

Web3 is uniquely positioned to create a healthier media landscape through transparency, incentives, identity, and reputation. We leave it to you to design the new conditions for trust in media, and offer the following provocations as a place to get started:

Work has been started.

These users each claimed they can complete the work by 2 years, 7 months ago. Please review their action plans below:

1) alexmasmej has started work.

Fork HumanityDAO and make it about trusted news sources instead

This idea loosely follows the Token-Curated Registry model, where cryptoeconomics/game theory autonomously incentivizes curators to approve "consensus" fact checking websites [https://medium.com/@tokencuratedregistry/the-token-curated-registry-whitepaper-bd2fb29299d6]. We create a governance token and, using cryptoeconomics, tokens holders can stake an application where other participants can vote on in a defined timeframe; which creates a miniature market with its own incentives.

Essentially, people would stake tokens to get a newspaper approved on the list. If it is accepted, it gets added to the list. If not, one loses its stake.

To be defined:

what qualifies a "trusted news source"? I propose we do a simple majority vote, and verify for independent journalism. In practice, any news sources that has 50% or more controversial opinions on it would not make the cut. It is very likely that Breitbart News would not make the cut, for instance. Rational curators would not suggest it, because they will lose their stake. On the other hand, Wall Street Journal or Wired are likely to get approved.

should an application be made by anyone, or specifically the trusted news sources itself? I recommend anyone could to try to lower barriers of entry, at least initially. Ideally, if we can get media's attention, journalists stake their application themselves, because being included would mean a better reputation and more website visitors.

The interest for this is twofold: first, as initial trustworthy famous papers gets added, and the system gets more robust and popular, it diminishes trolls potential room for attack. And it's precisely when major news actors are added that people will start added less established, but factual, newspapers, where getting on the list is actually needed and useful for them to decide whether or not they're trustworthy. WSJ don't need it, but local newspapers might.

The second is that once we have a coherent list of newspaper that are not very controversial, they can start "blockchain" objective facts, by staking their application if the fact is later deemed wrong. They're thus incentivized to not lie. Even better, media that relies on their facts will have to pay them tokens to reuse their facts. Which means fact news could become profitable.

Of course, there is a lot of assumption. Would be great to bounce ideas. Thanks for reading! 2) colealbon has started work.

cafe-society.news is an rss reader with the ability to create content filters. For example, I don't like to waste my morning news on "Pisces Horoscope" articles, and this tool allows me to filter those out) cafe-society.news allows for sharing filters and rss feeds via blockstack. For the goal of this hackathon, we'll attempt to set up a decentralized bulletin board upon which blockstack users can advertise and share their filter source code. We'd like to plan out (but not implement) the eth compatible smart contract components required to turn the bulletin board into a "vending machine" for curated filters. 3) tanawat1990 has started work.

We start to create reputation media website. 6) yzportfolio has started work.

If I had a barrier to my technical skills, I'll ask my problems to my tutors in ConsensysAcademy course through "slack". 7) xvettex has started work.

Idea is not ready yet. Probably some platform where users can tell arguments about news(if news is true or fake). If someone UI designer or frontend developer is looking for a team, contact me! 8) cspannos has started work.

I propose "Invest-y-gative" - a scientific journalism platform incentivized to serve the public interest.

About this project: Scientific journalism is a publishing methodology which includes the publication of original source documents and material along with the story. "Invest-y-gative" will use crypto-curation to drive investigative journalism based on the methodology of scientific journalism and the reputations of sources, journalists, and editors.

"Invest-y-gative" delivers:

Note: aside from being a crypto hobbyist/enthusiast, I have more than 20 years experience as a journalist and editor.

High level specs for the "Invest-y-gative" platform:

Users: consumers, editors, sources, journalists

Example:

For this challenge, I will provide "Invest-y-gative's" core Web3 Secure Dropbox which will provide the gateway for all source documents. This component is crucial for the project as it provides the Web3 foundation for the scientific journalism methodology that drives "Invest-y-gative". This is because it provides both the accountability for accuracy and the verification of primary source material through publication and notarization on Web3 systems. 9) viraja1 has started work.

News blockchain incentivizes fact checking and quality. It helps to build a curative reputation. It allows credit to be given to original sources. 10) allberg has started work.
