Per observations from @IamJeffG, let's implement the following changes:
When the map legend component is added to an alerts dashboard, add mostRecentAlerts and otherAlerts layers to the legend (currently they are not shown).
Right now, polygons layers are shown in the legend as a rectangular box with a fill and stroke (inherited from the stylesheet). This is also how Esri renders polygons on their maps in ArcGIS Online and elsewhere. However, this rectangular box shape often does not resemble the actual shape of the polygon on the map, leading to confusion. So let's find a superior way to cue that this legend item is a polygon with a potentially variable shape. My suggestion: a "blob" like shape, like this:
