This is a common task for which an own term exists: SEO - Search Engine Optimization. These pages give an introduction:

It's a broad topic, but hopefully we can improve findability already by a few simple measures. I will try some to them (like metadata) in the next version. At the other end of the spectrum, there are specialized agencies for this task.
Inserting links to our site on other web pages is a good idea!
Some other researchers, like Brandon Krick, told me they were happy to include a link to our site in theirs. Combining that with science blogs and repositories could help
I got feedback from GRC that people were looking for our site by google searching and couldn't find it. They were searching things like:
Can we put some related search terms in the metadata of the site to make it easier to find? Can we also start inserting some links to the site in other webpages (like our research site, or science blogs like TriboNet and iMechanica? Other ideas to increase searchability?
