Syncing my local dev, github and the DO dev site. #18

I'm using this pull request as a starting point for a more systematic development process and documentation. I feel like I still have a lot of learning curve to climb, but hey, you've got to start somewhere :-)

I will merge this branch into master to give us a new common starting point. Most of what is being merged is work I did in May on simplifying the UI for a single topic forum page. That work will be ongoing but I feel it's important to get this new common starting point now.
