make sure subject CANNOT make a choice on the rating scale in the moments before the rating scale is presented / while the image is still showing (check if this is a known bug or there is a timing issue)
see if there is a way to better save out the rating scale data / not save unnecessary tuples
check if there is a reason the final rating seems to be double saving

verified timing info records correctly and fully in log file.

still unclear why button press in the moment before rating scale appears affects the rating scale default / starting value (note: this is different than reading it as a response)

fixed rating scale issue so subject CANNOT make selection before scale appears (with help from Eshin)
