How are you launching jupyterlab? Is it from an activate anaconda environment? Do you have any MKL DLLs in C:\Windows\System32?
From the Anaconda Prompt
, please try conda update python
, then if that doesn't work, try:
set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
jupyter notebook
I use Jupyter Notebooks and not JupyterLab. I launch it using the promt from the base environment (I have the mentioned bug with the mkl on all my systems - 4 independent computers, so I decided to take one, uninstall conda completely and restart with a fresh system again. Now I only have a fresh base environment. so conda update python
does not do anything.).
This all happened after I updated my Anaconda systems.
I found
in C:\Windows\System32, but these files exist since 2012 there, so why does the error happen now?
But the problem exists no matter if I start with Anaconda Promt or from the navigator.
Setting the environment variable did not change anything for me.
Im totally desperate. I cannot use any Jupyter Notebook and I need to do my work. :-(
Now I only have a fresh base environment. so conda update python does not do anything.).
It should. We release new python builds more frequently than we release installers. Please show the output from conda list --show-channel-urls
.
Found out that maybe ikmultimedia Amplitube is installing the mkl in WIndows System from this tweet https://twitter.com/_tmp_account/status/1083817363047370754 . Just deleting the dlls in Windows/Systems32 does not prevent the error message.
Please update python to the latest version, show me the output from conda list --show-channel-urls
and then attempt the potential workaround I provided:
set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
jupyter notebook
.. all from the Anaconda Prompt.

Thank you.
python 3.7.1 h8c8aaf0_6 defaults
This is an old build of python, a build that predates our workaround for 'DLL-hell'.
Again, please from the Anaconda Prompt
enter conda update python
.. and ensure that you see that python has been updated, in conda list --show-channel-urls
you should see:
python 3.7.2 h8c8aaf0_10 defaults
.. once you have this new Python installed with our workaround for 'DLL-hell', from the Anaconda Prompt
, issue the following two commands:
set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
jupyter lab
and test whether it works correctly or not. If it does work correctly you may want to set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE
in your systems environment variables so you don't have to type this in all the time. Here's a link that may help: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/set-java_home-in-windows-10
Many thanks for your help!
As I mentioned earlier, conda update python
does not update anything.
OK, solved with conda install python=3.7.2
and now it works. Thanks for helping me out! (Is it true that other software should not deposit their mkl*.dll in C:\WIndows\Systems32?
OK great!
Can I ask, did you need to enable our workaround or not? Be careful, the code that reads that env. var. doesn't care what value it contains so confusingly set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION=0
enables it. To turn it off in your current shell, you need to use set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION=
.
Is it true that other software should not deposit their mkl*.dll in C:\WIndows\Systems32?
It is true. No ISVs (independent software vendors) should put non-driver software anywhere under C:\Windows
. This folder is to be controlled by Microsoft and the system. Please read about DLL-hell
, it's existed for ever and been documented for the same length of time, pretty much. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLL_Hell
I did need to set the env var. Turining it off as you stated with set ...=
brougth the error back.
Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad this hack enables people with somewhat messed up system to use our software :-)
Thanks for helping me out within the Anaconda env. I guess even the workaround is way more sophisticated than the code of the ISV causing the problem..
Deleting the mkl* from the C:\Windows\System32 alone was not enough. Are there maybe other files from the ISV corrupting or do I have to reinstall something?
It can be literally any dlls unfortunately.
Ok, so in order to prevent this can I set the env var system-wide or is this not a good idea?
Also I use nb_conda_kernels with different conda envs. I create an minimal env to start jupyter and then select the desired kernel. Should I install now 3.7.2 in each environment? Hope this is possible with all packages.
On your system I would recommended setting it system wide. Yes. This is because it is a problem with your system.
3.7.2 is fine with anything basically yes.
Ok, because now the problem is somewhere else:
conda create -n deeplearning ipykernel anaconda tensorflow keras
led me to https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51637222/entry-point-mkl-blas-dgem2vu-could-not-be-located
when activate deeplearning
I set the env var CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
system wide, but does not help.
Please look at the output of conda list. Again you'll see an old python.
Why are you installing the anaconda metapackage? It is equivalent to downgrading everything in that set of packages back to the versions contained in the last anaconda installer release. Just drop it, or install it via anaconda=custom but really it's better to install only what you need in each env.

Unfortunately not. Python=3.7.2 but crashes instantly after activate deeplearning
But seems to be another problem, the crash happens very fast but after a few tries I was able to capture screen.
Python is not crashing here. You are being told (in a hard to read way) that you haven't installed Visual Studio >=2015 (2017 is best). I'm not sure which package in this collection needs a compiler but it seems one of them does. Can you pass -v to conda activate and see if more information is given?
Installing VS2017 is also an option though.
Dear Ray
Not sure this is the right way to get in touch with you. I have a nasty ‘The ordinal 242 could not be located in the dynamic link library mkl_intel_thread.dll’ and read through this thread https://github.com/ContinuumIO/anaconda-issues/issues/10672
Unfortunately it did not solve the issue.
I have done what you asked anderl180 to du and below you also see my installed packages. I have also tried set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
What I try to follow is this tutorial https://www.pyimagesearch.com/2018/09/24/opencv-face-recognition/ and the error pops up when I try to run the command python extract_embeddings.py --dataset dataset --embeddings output/embeddings.pickle --detector face_detection_model --embedding-model openface_nn4.small2.v1.t7 of #STEP 1. The most frustrating issue is, that it already worked. It just turned out that #Step2 did not work and I messed around with deinstalling/reinstalling numpy and mkl – since this was a recommendation in one of these many blogs. After I did that I got the issue ‘The ordinal 242 could not be located in the dynamic link library mkl_intel_thread.dll’’ as described above.

I have identified where the issue is coming from. If I ask where libiomp5md.dll
, I get some dlls with higher priority than my anaconda one:
C:\Program Files\Point Grey Research\Spinnaker\bin64\vs2015\libiomp5md.dll
C:\Program Files\Point Grey Research\Spinnaker\bin\vs2015\libiomp5md.dll
C:\Program Files\Point Grey Research\FlyCapture2\bin64\libiomp5md.dll
C:\Program Files\Point Grey Research\FlyCapture2\bin64\vs2013\libiomp5md.dll
C:\Program Files\Point Grey Research\FlyCapture2\bin64\vs2015\libiomp5md.dll
C:\Users\...\anaconda3\Library\bin\libiomp5md.dll
Even setting set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
does not do anything for me, and python crashes whenever I try to import numpy. The only solution I found was renaming the other file to have it not reachable wy windows, but this makes my other package not usable. Is there something else I could try?
i just started using it on a VM. Got fed up with this error.
Please someone reply a fix or a workaround , I am done wasting my time , I'm getting tilted and I want to rage quit hard. Why the hell is this problem still existing? Seriously a waste of my money.
Personally, i used a Vmware and installed it on linux. Stop trying to work it in windows, it was a massive waste of time.

I guess I will try VMWare now. Like seriously , are the devs dead or something? I hear so many people commenting on the old version working fine for them. I guess , so the final answer is : issue not resolved. We should close this thread then.
It messes up with the dll if u have preinstalled something else which uses it as well, so the anaconda reads the previous one and not the one installed by itself, some of the solutions do work but idk why it didn't work for me. So i just used Vmware and called it a day.

@Ketz7 Installing VMWare + a new OS + Anaconda is not really a "handy" solution.
Is there a fix nowadays for this issue?
In my case it's The ordinal 242 could not be located in the dynamic link library libiomp5md.dll
with Windows 7 x64 + Anaconda3-2019.10-Windows-x86_64.exe
I tried with 2019-10, 2019-07, 2019-03, and it's the same.
Please try https://github.com/ContinuumIO/anaconda-issues/issues/10672#issuecomment-466716217
.. and let us know if it works for you. Thanks.
I'm just a student , so don't damage your code and files , I am not responsible , although it may not happen at all. The only fix is this- don't update Anaconda, just update the conda repository files. Uninstall the old Anaconda , and then download the older Anaconda .DONE. Windows https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda3-4.2.0-Windows-x86.exe
Windows 64 bit https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda3-4.2.0-Windows-x86_64.exe
Mac https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda3-4.2.0-MacOSX-x86_64.pkg
Linux https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda2-4.2.0-Linux-x86.sh
Linux 64 bit https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda3-4.2.0-Linux-x86_64.sh
In case , you want the new spyder or Jupyter updates , follow this-
Go to Anaconda Navigator->environments->choose "root" (in my case)->press the play button next to it->go to the terminal and manually update the required package by first downloading the repository ,then update it. You can find on Google , about how to fix it.
I am not WRITING the terminal code, because I am not an expert in that and I don't want to damage your software and code, but just check out some documentation and you will figure out.
here is a sample of what I did-
https://docs.anaconda.com/anaconda/install/update-version/
https://docs.conda.io/projects/conda/en/latest/user-guide/tasks/manage-pkgs.html
conda update --all
is the actual command but I used this-
conda update conda
//actually I did this like way back in 2019 , so I must be writting some dumb
conda install conda
//commands , forgive me
Again , I have no idea what this does , but it works.
USE THE TERMINAL TO UPDATE, IT WORKS FOR ME.
Forget about the new Anaconda version.
And yes, you can add repository for Jupyter I guess. I tried the Spyder v4 beta.
It is a case of you having conflicting software installed and the wrong version of the dll is being picked up.
This should not be a problem, we all have lots of programs installed on our computers, and all of them either use the C:\Windows\System32
files, or local .dll filesin the program folder, or use statically linked libs.
Possible solution: Shouldn't Anaconda pack the right .dll in the Anaconda installation folder?
So that this has the priority, and then it wouldn't matter if similar files (but different version) are found in C:\Windows\System32
.
I think that this is how many many Windows programs ensure that there are no .dll problems.
Try to open a jupyterbnb after fresh installation of Anaconda. Executing first cell then the error emerges.
Anaconda or Miniconda version:
Operating System:
conda info
conda list --show-channel-urls
