closes #26

I cherry-picked some commits from bravosierra99, and tried to fix 2 or 3 things, so it can pass unit tests in Travis.

Should work.

@CraftSpider if possible could we get this approved, so I can pull it into my #27 fix and see what else is wrong with that one?
