Animal and Other Faces with Emotion emojis #278

Open Crissov opened 7 years ago

There are Cat Face emojis #89 with some of the emotional expressions (gestures and grimaces) also offered by abstract human emoticons.

The same feature has been requested for other animals and anthropomoprhic emojis as well. Respective sticker apps like Petmojis have been made and are being sold. The latter include the Ghost ๐Ÿ‘ป, Devils ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ‘ฟ ๐Ÿ‘น, Aliens ๐Ÿ‘ฝ ๐Ÿ‘พ #7, Robot ๐Ÿค–, Skulls ๐Ÿ’€ โ˜ ๏ธ, Pile of Poo ๐Ÿ’ฉ and Pumpkin ๐ŸŽƒ, but also other existing or upcoming human characters (e.g. ๐Ÿ‘ถ ๐Ÿ‘ฆ ๐Ÿ‘ง ๐Ÿ‘จ ๐Ÿ‘ฉ ๐Ÿ‘ฑ ๐Ÿ‘ด ๐Ÿ‘ต ๐Ÿ‘ฒ ๐Ÿ‘ณ ๐Ÿ‘ฎ ๐Ÿ‘ท ๐Ÿ’‚ ๐Ÿ•ต ๐ŸŽ… ๐Ÿ‘ผ ๐Ÿ‘ธ ๐Ÿ‘ฐ). The former includes basically every animal, but especially mammals โ€“ย most often the Dog โ€“ and the ones that are usually displayed as a head only in particular (not all of which have Face in their Unicode designation): https://github.com/Ranks/emojione/issues/419

  • Dromedary Camel ๐Ÿช is shown as a camelโ€™s head in Emojione, while the Bactrian Camel ๐Ÿซ has its full body, with 2 humps. #357
  • Bear ๐Ÿป, Panda ๐Ÿผ, Lion ๐Ÿฆ, Fox ๐ŸฆŠ, Frog ๐Ÿธ, Hamster ๐Ÿน, Wolf ๐Ÿบ, Unicorn ๐Ÿฆ„ have FACE in their name and are usually displayed as heads.
  • Koala ๐Ÿจ, Boar ๐Ÿ—, Penguin ๐Ÿง, Bird ๐Ÿฆ, Chick ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฅ and Chicken ๐Ÿ” are sometimes shown portrait-only, by Apple in particular โ€“ย and they are grouped together in their GUI for this reason.
  • Unicode 9 animals Gorilla ๐Ÿฆ, Deer ๐ŸฆŒ, Rhinoceros ๐Ÿฆ and Eagle ๐Ÿฆ… do not feature FACE in their names, but are displayed as heads in several implementations, including Emojione. (The rhino is the only mammal head not facing the reader in Emojione!) Apple and Microsoft disagree. #339
  • Some other animals, e.g. Ram ๐Ÿ, Sheep ๐Ÿ‘ and Goat ๐Ÿ or Elephant ๐Ÿ˜ are also sometimes shown as heads. All of these are used as Asian Zodiac signs.
  • Itโ€™s unclear how vendors will handle new animal emojis coming to Unicode 10 in June 2017: Giraffe 🦒, Zebra 🦓, Hedgehog 🦔, Sauropod 🦕 and T-Rex 🦖.
  • Many other large animals come in explicit pairs, Dog/Poodle ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿฉ / ๐Ÿถ, Cat ๐Ÿˆ / ๐Ÿฑ, Mouse/Rat ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ€ / ๐Ÿญ, Rabbit/Bunny/Hare ๐Ÿ‡ / ๐Ÿฐ, Tiger/Leopard ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿ† / ๐Ÿฏ, Cow/Ox/Water Buffalo ๐Ÿ„ ๐Ÿ‚ ๐Ÿƒ / ๐Ÿฎ, Pig ๐Ÿ– (๐Ÿ—) / ๐Ÿท / ๐Ÿฝ, Monkey ๐Ÿ’ / ๐Ÿต ๐Ÿ™ˆ ๐Ÿ™‰ ๐Ÿ™Š, Horse ๐Ÿ‡ ๐ŸŽ / ๐Ÿด, Dragon ๐Ÿ‰ / ๐Ÿฒ.

Some vendors have associated certain facial expressions with particular animals, which has met with criticism. https://github.com/Ranks/emojione/issues/339

It would not be feasible to encode each animal face with many different emotions. Instead, they could be the result of Emoji ZWJ Sequences: either {animal face emoji} + U+200D + {emoticon emoji} or, vice versa, {emoticon emoji} + U+200D + {animal face emoji}. Another possible option is to treat (most) existing emoticons as precomposed characters by introducing Combining Facial Expressions, e.g. for Laughing Eyes and Open Mouth.

Once introduced, both methods could also be combined. Only accessories like clothes (hats ๐Ÿ‘’ ๐ŸŽฉ โ›‘ ๐ŸŽ“ ๐Ÿ‘‘, glasses ๐Ÿ‘“ ๐Ÿ•ถ, makeup ๐Ÿ’„ ๐Ÿ’‹, etc. ) and symbols (anger ๐Ÿ’ฅ ๐Ÿ’ข, sparkles โœจ โ‡๏ธ, dizzy ๐Ÿ’ซ, hearts โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ’› ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ’œ ๐Ÿ–ค ๐Ÿ’” ๐Ÿ’• ๐Ÿ’ž ๐Ÿ’“ ๐Ÿ’—, idea ๐Ÿ’ก, working โš™๏ธ โš’, sweat ๐Ÿ’ฆ, tear ๐Ÿ’ง, bubbles/balloons ๐Ÿ—ฏ ๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐Ÿ’ญ etc. ) would need to be possible right-side components then, e.g. โ˜บ๏ธ + ๐Ÿ•ถ = ๐Ÿ˜Ž Cool but ๐Ÿ˜‘ + ๐Ÿ•ถ = Tough. This is very similar to ordinary letters and combining diacritics in Unicode. Some diacritics also exist in an independent form (e.g. U+005E ^ and U+02C6 ห† vs. U+0302).
