Planet emojis #327

Most planets in our solar system have some characteristic visual properties: Mars is red, Saturn has rings, Jupiter a red spot etc. They have long been encoded by way of traditional arbitrary symbols from astrology. These could be combine with a planetary symbol, e.g. the Globe with Meridians, to form colorful circles. Alas, of the classic symbols only Venus and Mars are officially emoji already, because they are used as female and male symbols in gender sequences.

Unicode 10 will be adding even more symbols for stellar objects, mostly dwarf planets. Some of them will even get multiple symbols, because astrologers haven't agreed on a single one.

I already called for the necessary emojification of the astrological symbols that do not double as binary gender symbols when Google put forth their gender proposal in mid-2016 which got ♀ and ♂ emojified. Mercury had been proposed for explicitly gender-neutral ZWJ sequences. U+1F310 🌐 has the Emoji and Emoji_Presentation properties set. That means the sequences won't need an explicit Emoji Variation Selector, U+FE0F.

Coincidentally, there is a proposal now: L2/17-100 Planet Emoji Sequences by Zachary Swetz, Sam Lemonick, Alli McKee, Jessica Morrison @ihearttheroad, Anna Smylie, Craig Cummings, 18 April 2017.

This proposal is a result of a workshop at Emojicon 2016, see article in Nature. Earth is not included, but Pluto is.
