it is possible to do as acf and add options such as

• linked to this publication [maximal priority needed]
• preview size
• insert
• minimum / maximum images
• minumum / maximum sizes
• Star to set featured image [maximal priority nedded]

and take the same opportunity to refresh the field gallery and make it more ... modern (drag and drop style )

this is very important for sites with unique posts (real estate) each post is unique and has its own photos (linked to this publication) prevents all other photos of the same user from being seen and photos of others users.

seeing only the photos of the post, and only organizing (delete /re-order) them or upload new ones is the only possible logic.

for the star to featured image option it is a standard used everywhere. I don't need to explain it. a star appears on each photo (gallery field) you check the one you want to appear as featured image.
