please use biblatex instead of bibtex (see ziang’s texfile); this is much more flexible than bibtex, and allows for lots of customization; then, when you cite an author (e.g. Quarfoot et. al), you should use \textcite{cite-key} and when you cite parenthetically \parencite{cite-key}; this will avoid non-hyperlinked refs like quarfoot et. al
