The farther from auction's end, the less important bid updates should be. With the most important being in the final seconds. Possibly extend bid list update intervals to 60 seconds when there's 6 hours+ left in the auction, and in the last 10 minutes bring it down to every second or two, with every half second in the final seconds.
Gives those people who wait for the last second a better chance, turns it into a game as the clock ticks down.
