Shadows and lighting appear only on closest terrain and change colour of the ground #79

The closest terrain shows shadows but also appears several shades lighter. I can clearly see a grid of large squares on the ground where the boundary between shadowed/lit and unshadowed/lit terrain lies.

@howels I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what you are seeing here, could you post a picture if possible. Is it like the quad is casting light out itself? As I did have this problem I noticed when working on the weather implementation (although it looked like a circular pattern of lighting) The fix here was to the shadow bias... although the side effect is that the shadow is less visible closer to the ground

Hope this helps to illustrate. Noticed that this is only appearing at the higher quality levels, maybe cos it's trying to draw the closer terrain with a more realistic lighting model?

Thanks - yep, that certainly illustrates the problem, not something I've come across or anyone else has reported - which makes me wonder if it's a Unity bug against a certain OS/Graphics card/API/etc

Can you tell me what your hardware/os/graphics card you are running on and I'll see what I can turn up. Is this the first version you've tried (0.51b) or was it previously working on previous versions of the sim?

Running AMD CPU and Nvidia 2080ti with latest 460.32.03 Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 20.04 and kernel 5.8.0-36-generic #40~20.04.1-Ubuntu. Those are the latest drivers with all the Vulkan extensions and I use the system to play lots of different games without seeing these issues. Perhaps this is due to the older Unity version?

Noticed something. This is related to the detail setting. And it ONLY occurs after the first time that I enter the menu. Until I enter the menu everything renders normally. Then this: LOW - no artifacts image HIGH - just visible image VERY HIGH - artifacts go further from the camera image ULTRA - artifacts everywhere image

Yes, I think that lack of shader is the culprit - especially given it's the terrain object that the weird colouring is being drawn onto (on a sidenote, I do notice that Unity recognises that your desktop is 3440 x 1600, but doesn't seem to think it's a resolution that's selectable)

Does your graphics card support Vulkan? Unity defaults to using OpenGL on Linux, but I note a few people with shaders not working had better results with Vulkan. I think (and sorry to be vague, my Linux VM runs like a dog on my Mac for graphics) you can add --force-vulkan

If you can let me know what results that has.

You got it! My graphics card is totally happy with vulkan and this makes that shader run properly!!

Only small change was that under linux it's -force-vulkan instead of --force-vulkan - with a single hyphen.

I can supply that arg when I run it but might be helpful to prefer vulkan on Linux at least... Most systems support it and it allows for multi-core rendering calls and things which help slower systems too.

Great news. I guess OpenGL is there as the default as everything can run OpenGL (albeit with the exception of that particular shader it would seem) whilst I'd pretty much considered Vulkan to be more up to date and hence won't have the same compatibility.

I'll take a look at build options, as it would be good to try Vulkan and then fall back to OpenGL if it's not available, but not sure I can easily do that - will investigate. Might be interesting to benchmark some stuff as well on a common platform to see what the differences are in the various graphics APIs.
