The connection from squads > civics > battles is quite a mess and needs to be ironed out before getting hooked up properly. Here is where the design stands:
Squads:
They go into combat another singular squad. The victor is the one with units surviving. The other is disbanded upon death of all units.
They reside in a district and are the primary metric behind the Occupance judgement.
They have a stance such as Attack, Defend, Stand, or Retreat (?)
This stance can be set manually but by default will be whatever that factions local Commander has set as the default.
They may target another non-friendly squad in the district, and if that squad is not retreating they will initiate combat (?)
Questions:
What happens if the squad is targeting another squad which has in turn targeted a 3rd party to attack?
Conversely, what happens if a squad tries to attack another, but in turned they are targeted by another squad?
What happens if two squads target the same squad?
In what order might any of these things occur?????
Potential Solutions:
Let there be an Attack and Defense
Let each squad align with a side
Let the Defense be the Governing faction plus any factions with the Defend stance
Let the Attack be faction(s) hostile to the Defense with the Attack stance
Unknown: The order of which squad gets to attack first or select their targets
