Here's where the sources come from: usually a short reference was listed after a code or set of codes for a society (Author, Year, sometimes page numbers). The full-length references were scanned and OCD'd from book bibliographies, or copied from PDFs/Word documents. I then matched the short (Author-Year) refs with the full-length references. But, I haven't edited the full references at all - there are over 4000, and there are certainly inconsistencies in format + typos. Does anyone know of some kind of "library bot" that checks and corrects full-length references against WorldCat or some other library reference system? If it has to be done manually, I would put this pretty far down on the priority list (future RA project?)
Many of the inconsistencies caused by competing full references is easy to catch:
#!/usr/bin/env python
#coding=utf-8
import csv
import codecs
import textwrap
from collections import defaultdict
def csv_dict_reader(fname):
with codecs.open(fname, 'r', encoding="utf8") as fp:
for dict_row in csv.DictReader(fp, dialect="excel"):
for k in dict_row:
if dict_row[k] is None:
continue
dict_row[k] = dict_row[k].strip()
yield dict_row
def nopage(k):
return k.split(":")[0]
if __name__ == '__main__':
refs = defaultdict(set)
for r in csv_dict_reader('BinfordReferenceMapping_3Mar2016_utf8.csv'):
short = nopage(r['ShortRef_w_AND_wout_pp'])
refs[short].add(r['LongRef'])
for r in csv_dict_reader('ReferenceMapping_1Mar2016.csv'):
refs[r['ReferenceShort']].add(r['ReferenceComplete'])
# check 1 :: check competing refs
for r in sorted(refs):
if len(refs[r]) > 1:
print("%s\t%d" % (r.ljust(50), len(refs[r])))
for var in refs[r]:
out = "\n".join(
textwrap.wrap(
var, initial_indent=" ", subsequent_indent=' '
)
)
print(out)
print("")
print("")
print(len(refs))

Errors: 120
So, I could go through these and choose "by eye" the reference that looks best; using google to identify more accurate reference when they disagree, and adding an "a", "b" etc. after year when the refs in fact refer to different sources from the same author and year. But, I guess my larger concern is that the references are inconsistently formatted in general, and this will only catch cases where formatting differed between a matched Author-Year pair.
Still worth it? I guess @xrotwang's point about being able to check how many variables come from reference X is an important reason to do this. But, where would you all rank this relative to finalizing phylogenies, lat/long coordinates, etc.?
ps @SimonGreenhill nice method for identifying near matches/typos.
Hi Kate, this sounds like a good job for an RA, but can wait until after the first release I think.
This should be much easier to check now -- compare EA/references.csv:key to Binford/references.csv:key
@kirbykat -- I know this is a massive longshot, but did you see bibtex files anywhere for these?
Oh, and if we get BibTeX, a dplace.bib
should be added to Glottolog, including associated language codes and probaly doctype "Ethnographic".
Btw.: We already have almost 10,000 records tagged as "ethnographic" in Glottolog, so maybe trying to match will give us a headstart.
@SimonGreenhill @xrotwang No bibtex files. I have already manually separated author, year and page numbers, though. (Page numbers were available for Binford only). The two datasets' references have not yet been merged, as you say. And there are A LOT of typos, because these were extracted using OCR and/or previously published versions of the bibliography, which themselves were full of typos.Let me know if you'd like me to send author - year - ref file (though should be in depository). I tried to use consistent methods when there was no date, no author, etc.
I already started some work towards cleaning up reference data. Will push a pull request soon.
Think this is being taken care of in https://github.com/D-PLACE/dplace-data/issues/86 and should be fixed on a case-by-case basis
Some sources appear for both Binford and EA data points, and thus appear in both reference files, but with inconsistent citations, e.g.:
