I don't know if you're at all interested, but I coded this floatland portal spawner a while ago, which might be useful: https://gist.github.com/Amaz1/a8543ad6f13ee417efe98df4dbb4ac37

I'm probably not going to be using it for much in the near future, so I would be very happy if it did help! I have got a little bit more code which adds some basic effects to the floatlands, if you'd be interested in this (or if you want the textures - warning, they're not very good :P) let me know!
