I gave this quite a bit of thought after several thousands of hours and many WT cycles... Although I've always preferred the "Capital" city to centralize things, i think after so many cycles it might be cool to vary a little?
My idea was instead of a major central city, to make 2 - 3 - 4 - more?... smaller towns at a relatively short distance from each other (ie 100-200m away from each other), which could even have more complex law/ruling attached to them like profession alignment (either enforced by GM/ServerRules; or just controlled by law ie: not able to sell items other than XYZ in each "district" - or have higher taxes)
- If you want to be harsher, even make a wider region around the city, so there definitely cannot be people selling food easily around the ironworks etc...
Examples:
Smithing/Ironworks city (closer to desert)
Foodies Hamlet (closer to a grassland region)
Furniture/Wood town (closer to major forested areas)
In a way this can be a simple mechanism just to add some variation; but can also help manage
difficulty.
