debugg arducopter code modification by printing to serial port #963

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. connecting to ftdi/console port
2. run code
3. read gibberish from serial port using a terminal reader such as cool term 
for mac

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
i was hoping to see print statements that i put in the code to determine if the 
code i added is working correctly

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.8.1a

Please provide any additional information below.
the serial port gives out periods and commas nothing that i sent to it.
