10 months ago Incorporate feedback from a colleague with attention defecit disorder (ADD):
- "they feel anxious about being put into breakout rooms, especially if they aren't mentioned in advance of the meeting. This is because they feel under pressure to say the right thing on-the-spot, which they find hard to do because of their ADD
- they also feel like if they aren't speaking or putting something in the chat, people will think they're lazy and don't care - this isn't the case
We discussed some ideas for how to mitigate these feelings:
- if we plan to put people into breakout rooms, announce this in advance so people can come prepared to the session, or choose not to come if they don't feel comfortable participating
- if a session involves participation, state that people don't have to say something or put something in the chat if they don't feel comfortable. It's okay if people prefer to listen to what other people have to say, so they can reflect on this in their own time"
Andy: "Setting the expectations for them so when they are being planned, the comms are clear. Helps in general too to make sure they have a goal or outcome or purpose and how they'll be acheived."
