R is licensed under the GPL 2/3; if we choose this, all derived works must be open-source or source-available.
MIT does not impose restrictions on the redistribution of binaries with/without source, but all derived works must include our copyright header.

R packages can be put on the main repository (called CRAN) as long as they have a license that's listed on this page which includes both GPL and MIT.

I like the idea of the GPL licenses, but then maybe I'm naive and idealistic.
