By @yurtman :

Last week Victor, Claudio, Richel, Peter and I (Winand) met to discuss our planning for 2015, mainly with respect to:

1 - Makercourse planning (Friday nights 19:00 - 22:00) 2 - General progress on projects (OpenerPCR, 3D printer, Mealworms) 3 - Monthly DIYbio weekend session for adults

1 - Makercourse Planning

Format The agreed upon format is that the standard Arduino work/mentoring will continue throughout- accompanied by 5, 5-week "modules" organized around a central theme. Each module has 1 person in charge with assistance from other members as volunteers. For now this is a rough planning, allowing the opportunity for Johan to create his own module, should he so desire. If you would like to assist someone you are encouraged reply to this email!

Module 1 (Jan 09 - Feb 06) (In Progress)

Apple Peeling Machine Using old printers and arduino to make an apple peeling machine

Project Lead: Martijn Volunteers: (none, AFIK none needed)

Module 2 (Feb 13 - Mar 13)

Basic Experiments with Arduino A series that uses the Arduino to measure basic parameters with the hope that when kids are curious about something they will know how to design the experiment.

Project Lead: Richel Volunteers: Claudio, Winand

Module 3 (Mar 20 - Apr 17)

Food A series themed around food. Exploring different food groups, how to test for them, how to brew/ferment, molecular cooking, hack your taste-buds (miracle berry), sous-vide cooking and extracting protein from mealworms.

Project Lead: Winand Volunteers: Victor, Peter

Module 4 (Apr 24 - May 22)

Using the Spectrophotometer We recently found a free spectrophotometer. Negotiations about where it will stand are ongoing but the potential to do fun things with it are already being discussed. These include measuring proteins, determining properties of optical filters, LEDs, plants etc. and maybe even a CSI-style detective game.

Project Lead: Peter Volunteers: Victor, Winand

Module 5 (May 29 - Jun 26)

My First 3D printer (some additional costs involved)

This project was planned in the last slot to allow us sufficient time to try to reduce the price as much as possible, current cost is estimated to be 60 euro.

The module includes building a 3D printer using old DVD/CD drivers and one diskette drive.Victor could print all the parts for every kit.

Every children gets one kit. This could be coupled to other workshops - like understanding the parts of a dvd drive, scavenging for pieces in electronics, Arduino basics(since they will have to go though the lines of code for small changes), soldering and many others. Participants will take home their own 3D printer at the end.

Project Lead: Victor Volunteers: Winand

2 - General progress on Projects

General It was suggested that all DIYbio members try to be there on the Friday nights, those not involved with a module or Arduino will work on the projects.

OpenerPCR Piet has managed to mill the aluminium heating block well enough to start building the prototype (!!!!). Claudio and Piet looked at what needs to be done with the electronics last week, according to Richel the inverter probably did not work because of the transistors were the wrong way round. Claudio will continue troubleshooting this on Friday.

3D printer Victor is convinced he can finish the 3D printer soon an bet a crate of beer with Richel that it would be done by Feb 14th so it may be used as a demo on the DJO open day. Last week Victor did some more work on the extruder and heating bed and hopefully will continue this Friday.

Mealworms All but 5 beetles have laid their eggs and died. We lost most baby mealworms when we thew away our bedding when we had the mite infestation but we do have quite a few. The babies definitely fall through the netting in the bottom of our drawers. Johan has been keeping an eye on them and undertook the massive task of separating out all the dead beetles. We hope to use these to make a bioplastic but there are no concrete plans.

3 - Monthly DIYbio weekend session

With the launch of the lab at DJO, the departure of Alessio and Alina and the launch of miniPCR an OpenqPCR our focus has been on workshops for kids at DJO. In order to still be able to do activities and workshops for an international and more adult audience we might do something along the lines of what Alessio proposed:

"I have one extra thing.. Is it possible to organize once a month or even once every 2 months a events during the weekend (so I can also participate)?

I was thinking something like evening event with some food and drinks (mealworms based snacks...), a scientific documentary/talk show session and some lab/art activity. Something open also for other people (adults...) and with a little entrance ticket just to cover the expenses. It could be a starting point to organize social events."

Course has ended, no need to do this anymore :-)
