A small (and closeable) widget could be implemented to give the user directions. E.g. when nothing is loaded -> how to load a dataset, when something is loaded -> how to enable/disable modes, etc.

Error messages should be added as well.

Popup window
Notification widget? (Similar to popups in PyCharm)
