Either by status messages, popup error warnings, or something else

Most print statemens have been converted to Statusbar messages.

However:

[ ] There are still print statements in some submodules (print statements have to be forwarded to GUI)
[ ] Some messages should be popup error warnings instead of statusbar messages

We could alternatively use a logger instead of a status bar message...
