cisscal polarization calibration update to version 4.1 #5212

Open thareUSGS opened 1 year ago

thareUSGS commented 1 year ago

ISIS version(s) affected: 3-8.x

Description
The Cassini Team has reported that there is a polarization calibration update. They would like us to use the very latest calibration version, 4.1.

Possible Solution
update to version 4.1 of the calibration from the IDL code from here: https://pds-rings.seti.org/holdings/volumes/COISS_0xxx/COISS_0011/extras/cisscal/make_polar_image.pro readme: https://pds-rings.seti.org/holdings/volumes/COISS_0xxx/COISS_0011/extras/cisscal/make_polar_image_readme.txt

I have also attached the PDF with the information about the update also. CISSCAL_RELEASE_AND_VERSION_HISTORIES.pdf

We did reach out to the original author for the IDL version and the update is not simply just some calibration value updates (as I had assumed).

This issue might need a content expert who is familiar with Cassini data for testing any updates. Perhaps we can leave this open for a little longer and see if we can find someone to help.

paraphrased: Since the ISIS code was last updated in 2010, the IDL version has had many updates between v3.6 and v4.1. Thus to sync the calibration methods, it is much more than just the polarimetry updates (as listed in this ticket). If one were to tackle the updates for ISIS, it would be best to ignore the GUI code and focus on the command-line script ("cisscal_cl.pro"). The actual calibration steps are modularized and run sequentially, and most of the math is not particularly complicated (integration of transmission functions over wavelength, filtering, etc.). An exception might be the dark current calculation, which is actually a dark simulation based on coefficients contained in the support files. That part may require some additional attention to fully grasp what's going on. Note the IDL version 4.1 is considered final.
