As noted in these comments 1, 2 (in the same thread), we've repeatedly come up against mild keyword pushback from the metadata validator, reviewers, and ScienceBase, including encouragement to use the USGS Keyword Thesaurus. See also https://github.com/USGS-R/meddle/issues/66 for an easily fixable sub-problem within this broader problem.
We may be able to simply update the FGDC metadata template to include expected keywords, but it might also be nice to add the flexibility for users to specify their own keywords more freely, along with more modern examples to help meet these external expectations.
