DS Classic Menu - Add info to top/bottom row

Here's what I learned about the DS Classic Menu from this page:

• It uses a cursor navigation system
  • By extension, I can also assume A will take me to the selected item, but the entire point of the manual is for the newbie perspective
• B takes me back to the ROM navigation menu

But...what's the cursor system for? What can I do with it? Also, it doesn't mention the touch control options.
