Welcome to class!

My name is David Schlinkert and I am a senior policy analyst at Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy and an adjunct professor in the School of Public Affairs. If you want to know more, feel free to reach out!

There are a couple of things I want to let you know before this class begins:

1. Statistical knowledge builds upon itself. If you miss something, please never feel bad or stupid about asking questions. I ask a lot of stupid questions, and I’ve always found that it serves me well in the long run. a. In addition to the syllabus’s objectives for this course, one of the skills that I hope you gain from this class is asking good questions. There are a lot of new terms in regression analysis, it’s basically like learning a new language, so take time to formulate your questions – it will help you get what you need quickly from a supportive online community.
2. Be patient with yourself. As graduate students you are pushing yourself to become some of the most educated people on the planet, and it’s important that you give yourself adequate time to learn some of the new challenging concepts that are presented in this, and subsequent, courses.
3. This class has an interdisciplinary cadre of students. Some of you have economic backgrounds, and others have journalist and social science experiences. Help each other out as much as you can. I encourage group work and asking each other for help. Github, as you will learn, is a great space for everyone to find answers to their statistical and technical questions.
4. I think the work in this class is challenging, but I’m confident we’re going to have a lot of fun learning new things that will advance your careers and help you solve vexing problems that the world needs solved!

Here is better information on finding the labs. There are placeholders for submitting labs on Canvas, but the instructions are all on the GitHub site (this week it’s a word document, but typically they are HTML files.
