Pre-registration chapter suggestions #37

Dear all, please find my suggestions for improvement of the current text:

Pre-registration Definition - and immutable (i.e. cannot be changed) - please delete this - this is not true. Many newer repositories, like OSF allow versions like they do for preprints. Additionally, IRB boards allow updates to studies - when explained adequately. We should not say they can not be changed - the purpose is to share any plans and any future amendments on those plans transparently.

2) The source you use for preregistration has a better division then the one used currently. Preregistration can take the form of: Non-peer reviewed registration- registration in any database/repository/clinicaltrials gov Peer Reviewed Registration- which can then be a full study protocol published, or a registered report. So consider structuring the section in this way, and adding a paragraph on study protocols being published, ideally before mentioning reg. reports - as protocol publication is historically older.

My suggestion would be something like: Publication of a study protocol: Researchers may opt to publish a full protocol of their study in a peer reviewed journal. Advantages of this approach are getting expert reviews on all elements of your plans - unlike author registration where the plan has not been peer reviewed by independent experts. Difference between publication of a study protocol or registered report - is that the protocol is published as soon as reviewed, it does not depend on publication of the main study. It also allows publication of the main study in another journal, as well as a new set of reviewers for the full study.

For Field Specific - can we add Medicine And have a section on registering RCTs - using SPIRIT guidelines, as well as analysis plan - good resource is https://trialsjournal.biomedcentral.com/submission-guidelines/preparing-your-manuscript/study-protocol

Let me know if it would be best to create a google doc and edit the text in it.
